Last year, we celebrated the fourth Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a two-day virtual event on Saturday, October 10 and Monday, October 12. The event included pan-indigenous panels where Native artists and dignitaries shared their unique perspectives on how important it is to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ history and heritage across the nation instead of celebrating the myth of Christopher Columbus. The two-day event concluded with a concert on the evening of October 12, featuring musicians and dancers. The event was recorded and broadcast online, powered by PhillyCam. We will highlight a portion of the event in each quarterly newsletter. Here’s a link to the Concert and a recap of panel 5, in case you missed it!

PANEL 5 | Indigenous Futures Now: Not for Columbus
Indigenous Peoples of the Americas have survived one of the major unspoken holocaust of the last 500 plus years of humanity. While this issue is insurmountable, in this panel we will explore what role Columbus Day, the Doctrine of Discovery or settler colonial mythology, as a whole, have to do with our cultural erasure, and in contrast, centering ideas of Indigenous Futurity as a present act, we will discuss what is possible based on what we desire for each of our communities, nations, and collective futures.
