Campaign

Overview

educational Awareness Campaign

In 2017, we came together to celebrate and bring awareness about Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Philadelphia. Since that year, our campaign has grown and, today not only we aim to deconstruct stereotypes of “the Indian,” but also to build a narrative in its place that celebrates the wealth of Indigenous cultures, histories, knowledge, and politics, as well as to create an educational environment statewide that is empathetic and caring to Native Americans from North, Central and South America.

IPD Philly - Coalition Building Workshops Series

This is a presentation/workshop series for schools, libraries, and organizations. They are facilitated as teach-ins for organizations and individuals interested in learning how together we can advocate and celebrate Native American History and Indigenous Peoples’ Day of the Americas across the city and state of Pennsylvania.

Through hands-on long-term activities, the workshops equipped participants with the tools to help Indigenize the city, as well as to bring Indigenous issues, histories, and experiences into their educational, activist, organizational, and institutional work. These workshops also provided the opportunity for participants to network and organize across institutions, organizations, and disciplines. Some of the issues covered ranged from Indigenous resistance to colonialism throughout the Americas, to the ongoing histories of the Lenape peoples (Delaware Nation)  and their diaspora, as well as the harms enacted by Columbus and the violent legacies of Columbus Day. They also included Taino histories and experiences, the history and importance of the National Day of Mourning, and deconstructing harmful stereotypes about Indigenous Peoples.

If you would like IPD Philly – EDU TEAM to run a similar workshop series for your organization or institution, please get in touch

Lenape Program Working Group (LPWG).

In order to properly build strong and lasting relationships with all of the 5 federally recognized Lenape (Delaware) tribes, we have formed the Lenape Program Working Group (LPWG) with the support and guidance of Lenape members (Theresa Johnson and Andy Jacobs) who participate in our annual event.

The mission of the LPWG is to support Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Philadelphia with programming that is culturally appropriate to Lenape traditions and their homecoming community initiatives.

If you are Lenape (Delaware) from any of the 5 tribes and would like to learn more about it, please send an email to IPD PHILLY via our contact form.

Why We Started

#IPDPhilly 2017

In 2017, three Indigenous women, Priscilla Bell (Taino), Mabel Negrete (Native Chilean) and Stephanie Mach (Dine), organized an Indigenous Peoples’ Day (IPD) celebration and education event in Philadelphia at the Perelman Building of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. They had experienced first hand the ill effects of the systemic erasure of Indigenous peoples in the United States and were motivated to create change. Particularly in Philadelphia, where 23,280 Native Americans live (1), but no federally recognized Tribes exist, lack of representation and awareness negatively impacts policy, court decisions, and public support for Native communities, creating a void that is filled with toxic stereotypes and misperceptions. This Indigenous Peoples’ Day event sought to counter this narrative and honor the history, heritage and culture of  the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas. A particular focus goes into centering the voices of the Taino people (Indigenous Caribbean) who first encountered the European invasion, as well as, the Lenni-Lenape people (Delaware Nation), who are the original inhabitants of Lenapehoking, which today includes Philadelphia, eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Delaware.

The Philadelphia County total population of American Indian and Alaska Native Alone or in Combination is 23,280.
