Letter From the Editors – Spring Newsletter 2023

Happy New Year and Spring Equinox from Indigenous Peoples’ Day Philly, Inc! We had another fantastic year in 2022 and have a lot of exciting plans in store for 2023 and beyond!

We celebrated an incredible Indigenous Peoples’ Day on October 10th at Shackamaxon (Penn Treaty Park). We had an amazing lineup of speakers and performers, not to mention all the vendors and sponsors who set up tables! We want to give a special shout-out to Theresa Johnson and her family for flying all the way from the Delaware Nation of Moraviantown in Ontario, Canada, to be with us! And, of course, thanks to all of YOU, IPD Philly Community, for joining us on this beautiful day!

Our EDU Team held many successful Coalition Building Workshops throughout 2022 with several institutions here in Philadelphia, and we plan to keep that momentum going this year! Our goals with these workshops are to help create a more accurate telling of Indigenous history in the Americas and bring awareness to ongoing and historical issues. Additionally, our Action Community Team will continue to work to push to make Indigenous Peoples’ Day a statewide commemoration!

We are excited to have received a Media Justice Grant from Bread & Roses to support the Communications team and Media team in the production of videos and further educational materials that will support our various campaigns. We also received a sponsorship award from the Penn Treaty Special Services District (PTSSD). Thank you to Bread & Roses and PTSSD for helping to support us in doing the work we do.

Last but not least, be sure to mark your calendars! The 7th annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Philly will be on Monday, October 9th, 2023! Keep an eye out for more information in the coming months! We can’t wait to see you there!

As always, our quarterly newsletter is jam-packed with information and resources for all our readers, so be sure to sign up for our future installments!

Wanishi, Chaltumay, T’oyaxsut ‘nüüsm, Gracias, Thank You,

IPD Philly – Board & Editors
