Our Future is Collective. Take Action!
By IPD Philly’s Team
On October 13, 2025, Indigenous Peoples’ Day Philly launched a city-wide advocacy campaign to reinstate Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Philadelphia—following the August 6, 2025, Pennsylvania court ruling that overturned the 2021 executive order replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Our time is now.
We are actively meeting with City Council members to advance a path toward truth, healing, and reconciliation in Philadelphia. Our goal is clear:
- Permanently reinstate Indigenous Peoples’ Day as an official city holiday on the second Monday of October.
- Engage Council members and Philadelphia residents in conversations to rename Columbus Day as Italian American Heritage Day, following the example of other cities.
At IPD Philly, we believe in coexistence and mutual respect between Indigenous peoples and Italian Americans—but never at the expense of Indigenous erasure. Indigenous Peoples’ Day stands for truth, justice, and respect for Indigenous communities in Philadelphia. Columbus Day, by contrast, remains rooted in myth and historical cruelty.
This movement cannot be ignored. When we stand together, change becomes inevitable.
If you live, work, or study in Philadelphia, now is the time to make your voice heard. We are ready to organize—together. 💪🏽🌿
