Happy Spring Equinox,
from Indigenous Peoples’ Day Philly, Inc!
Greetings, IPD Philly community!
In April 2016, Lakhota youth and elders from Standing Rock and surrounding Indigenous communities organized a campaign to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). Motivated by the youth, a water protectors’ camp was established and housed many Indigenous land protectors from all over the world. These national protests inspired a movement of resistance to combat the lack of education and awareness about Indigenous peoples of the Americas, which was the catalyst behind our organization, Indigenous Peoples’ Day Philly Inc. Now, for nearly 8 years, we have pushed for social justice and culturally inclusive education about Indigenous peoples. Our newsletters are a piece of this work, so please continue to support our journey as we have many stories and resources for you to learn!
In this issue, we are featuring stories about the latest repatriation efforts of Indigenous objects in popular museums, LandBack initiatives for the Sioux Community, and the accomplishments of Lily Gladstone (Blackfeet/Nez Perce) that inspire a new hope for Indigenous representation in the film industry.
We also recommend a variety of books featuring renowned authors Ned Blackhawk, Craig Santos Perez, and Nasuġraq Rainey Hopson who all incorporate Indigenous storytelling as a way to recount the true history of the Americas, cultural celebrations, and to find community healing.
Additionally, we share resources to learn about and support Indigenous-owned gardens and farms such as Salish Roots Farm, and, Mashkiikii Gitigan Medicine Garden. Each location promotes Indigenous land stewardship while cultivating spaces of food justice that support local Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
Our quarterly newsletter is full of information and resources for all our readers, so be sure to sign up for our future installments.
Lastly, check out our Giving Season Fundraiser Campaign page, and help us reach our Spring 2024 Fundraising Goal of 10K by the end of May! Our page has an excellent overview of our successes and how to support us. Donations go towards general operations to support our annual event, coalition-building workshops, media justice work, and our push to make Indigenous Peoples’ Day a statewide commemoration.
