On this day, March 12th, we proudly celebrate the Mexica New Year, often referred to as the Aztec New Year, as part of the rich cultural heritage recorded in the Aztec calendar. The vibrant festivities of Yancuīc Xihuitl (“New Year” in Nahuatl) begin on the evening of March 11th. They can extend for several weeks throughout March. Today, these profound celebrations resonate within Nahua communities across Mexico. They also find significance among Chicano and Mexican American communities in the United States.
The ceremonies are filled with life. They feature traditional songs and dances. There are heartfelt offerings of seeds and the illuminating glow of ocote (pitch-pine) candles. The inauguration of Yancuīc Xihuitl occurs with a ceremony. They burn the flag of the previous year. This makes way for the flag of the new year. It’s a powerful symbol of renewal and hope. This celebration honors the past. It also embraces the promise of the future. It reflects the enduring spirit and resilience of the Indigenous Mexicans across Turtle Island.
