Indigenous Peoples’ Day Philly officially launches its Year of Awareness, a multimedia coordinated effort to celebration, defend and restore Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Philadelphia following a court decision that overturned the former mayor’s executive order and reinstated Columbus Day.
This moment matters — and how we respond matters even more.
The Year of Awareness is a year-long commitment to truth, education, and civic participation. It is about ensuring that Philadelphia’s policies reflect historical accuracy, community values, and respect for Indigenous peoples who continue to live and contribute here today.
Throughout the year, IPD Philly’s teams will:
- Publish a monthly newsletter From the Movement Desk with updates, resources, and calls to action
- Host community meetings to inform, mobilize, and build collective power
- Re-release our public statement over social media explaining what happened and why it matters
- Launch a petition calling for the official reinstatement of Indigenous Peoples’ Day
- Share clear pathways for contacting City Council and engaging in the civic process
- Share content on key moments — 1492, 1892, 1992, & today — and their lasting impact
- Celebrate our growing movement that is rooted in history, community, and 10 years of Indigenous-led advocacy
This work is not about division.
It is about truth, education, and honoring Indigenous peoples — past, present, and future.
