Job Description – Indigenous Peoples Coordinator
(Part-time) Independent Contractor / Remote & In-person Position

This is a part-time primarily remote role for an Indigenous Peoples Coordinator at Indigenous Peoples’ Day Philly, Inc. The Coordiantor will be responsible for planning, organizing, and executing events and campaigns related to Indigenous Peoples’ Day and its policy goals in the City of Philadelphia and statewide, including:

  • Statewide mandate of Indigenous Peoples’ Day
  • Mandating tribal and Indigenous history in public schools
  • Meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities by the City of Philadelphia

The Coordinator will work closely with staff members, stakeholders and volunteers to ensure campaign aligns with the organization’s mission and policy goals. Additionally, the Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining social media accounts, generating content, and updating the organization’s website. Candidates should be located within traveling distance of Philadelphia and willing to travel within the region and the State of Pennsylvania for occasional in-person events and meetings. 

This is a part-time, contracted position anticipated at approximately 20-28 hours per month. Candidates will need to have access to their computer, phone, and internet, but travel and work-related expenses will be covered by IPD Philly. The compensation range for this position is $25-30 per hour based on experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates all aspects of the IPD Philly’s campaign in collaboration with the Executive Director, Communications, and programmatic teams, including but not limited to:
    • Coordinate and collaborate with stakeholders and community members (Native and non-native) to identify and define campaign requirements, scope, and, objectives.
    • Build relationships with key stakeholders in the Philadelphia region and throughout the state of Pennsylvania.
    • Coordinate and facilitates campaign strategy meetings, including all pre-and post-event duties such as preparing agendas, creating presentations, sending meeting recaps and status reports.
    • Assists in the coordination and implementation of campaign’s work plans, timelines, and schedules particularly associated with our annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration.
    • Collaborates and assists the Communications team with related media strategic plans and deliverables.
    • Evaluate the program’s success and report on campaign deliverables to the Executive Director, designated staff, and funding requirements.
    • Carry out other duties which naturally fall within the reasonable expectations of the position.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Strong ability to collaborate with a diverse group of community members;
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultures and issues related to Indigenous Peoples of the Americas;
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities is required, and experience with tribal politics, and tribal law, is a plus;
  • Knowledge of or relationships with key stakeholders (e.g. Indigenous groups, media, government) in the Philadelphia area and/or Pennsylvania is a plus;
  • Experience in event planning, campaign management, and strategic thinking;
  • Strong organizational and project management skills;
  • Flexible, committed, and punctual;
  • Able to work with and without supervision;
  • Able to work in a team, independently and remotely;
  • Available to work during some standard business hours, evenings, and weekends;
  • Must be available to attend staff meetings at least weekly for 1 to 3 hours and to commit for a weekly flextime schedule of 5 to 10 hours;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in person, writing, telephone, text, and zoom;
  • Has a computer and phone, plus reliable internet access;
  • Experience with social media management and content creation for community outreach;
  • Familiarity with Instagram, Facebook, Google Suite, WordPress, Canva, and Airtable is a plus;
  • Able to acquire reliable transportation;
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field to social/political advocacy, Indigenous studies, or community organizing is preferred, but not required;
  • English fluency is required and Spanish fluency is a plus;

Selection Process

Qualified candidates will be contacted to schedule a phone screen to confirm alignment with the role. From there, selected candidates will be invited to schedule an interview with IPD Philly’s Executive Director. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
