LETTER FROM THE EDITORS – FALL NEWSLETTER 2023

Greetings and Happy Fall Equinox
from Indigenous Peoples’ Day Philly, Inc!

Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Philly is right around the corner! We’ll be at Shackamaxon (Penn Treaty) Park on Monday, October 9th from 11 AM to 5 PM! We can’t wait to see you all there!

There are a few ways you can help make this event a success!

In this newsletter, we’re featuring a story reflecting on the Supreme Court decision to uphold the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) in the Haaland v. Brackeen case. The 7-2 vote serves to protect tribal sovereignty and the lives of Native children in the US. Before implementing ICWA in 1978, removing children from their homes to be raised by non-Native families was a regular practice of genocide in the country for centuries.

We’re also featuring an article that honors the four Indigenous women who made the Forbes 50 over 50 list. The list highlights dynamic female leaders and entrepreneurs who have achieved success over the age of 50, often overcoming formidable odds or barriers, and proving that success has no age limit.

Finally, we have an article that centers on the 20 Indigenous-made films featured at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This festival was founded in 1976 and takes place every year in the Fall. This article shares summaries and trailers of highly anticipated indigenous short films and features from all over Indian Country.

We’re also featuring several indigenous-run museums across the country, teachings on the lines between traditional and scientific knowledge in plant life, and several amazing books from the last two years to check out by indigenous authors!

As always, our quarterly newsletter is jam-packed with information and resources for all our readers, so be sure to sign up for our future installments!
